There are two types of damages that can be awarded in a civil lawsuit: compensatory damages and punitive damages. Compensatory damages are intended to reimburse the victim for losses suffered as a result of the defendant’s actions. Punitive damages, on the other hand, are designed to punish the defendant and deter future misconduct.

Compensatory damages can be either economic or noneconomic in nature. Economic damages include reimbursements for medical bills, lost wages, and property damage. Noneconomic damages include compensation for pain and suffering, emotional distress, and loss of enjoyment of life. Punitive damages are always non-economic in nature.
