How to burn Debian ISO image onto USB stick

Question:

I want to install Debian onto my laptop. I downloaded the .iso file and now I want to "burn" it onto a USB stick and make it bootable. How can I do this?

Answer:

If you're under Linux or Unix (e.g. FreeBSD) there's a quick way to burn Debian .iso file onto a USB stick.

First you need to find out what the name of your USB stick device is (on FreeBSD it looks something like /dev/da0), then type the following command to copy .iso files and make the USB stick bootable:

dd if=debian-6.0.6-i386-netinst.iso of=/dev/da0 bs=4M

Setting block size to 4M will make writing the contents of the .iso image much faster. Use it.
