Sony Vegas is the most prominent software for video editing. Pro version will cost you around 600 bucks, but for the basic video editing you can easily go for the Sony Vegas Movie Studio for under 80 bucks.
I wouldn't recommend Pinnacle or Corel VideoStudio, it's crap compared to Vegas. Vegas free trial can be downloaded here: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com
